The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal James E. Miller (MCSN: 2557592), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 27 October 1970, while conducting a routine combat patrol in the Que Son Mountain region of Quang Nam Province, Lance Corporal Miller’s squad sighted fifteen North Vietnamese Army soldiers and, from his position nearest the hostile soldiers, Lance Corporal Miller directed his fire team to engage the enemy. In the resulting exchange of fire, the squad leader was seriously wounded. Unhesitatingly taking charge, Lance Corporal Miller fearlessly moved across the fire-swept terrain and, after administering first aid to the casualty, directed his medical evacuation aboard a transport helicopter. Meantime, the enemy had sought cover in a cave complex well concealed by the heavy jungle growth. Although the rugged terrain and extremely inclement weather severely limited visibility, Lance Corporal Miller nevertheless conceived a bold plan of attack and, with complete disregard for his own safety, led an aggressive assault against the North Vietnamese Army soldiers. While shouting encouragement and directions to his companions, he boldly rushed to the cave nearest him and was preparing to hurl a grenade through the aperture when he was seriously wounded by hostile fire. Although suffering intense pain, he continued to exhort his men to maximum combat efforts but was mortally wounded as he attempted to deploy to a more effective position. His heroic and determined actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, bold leadership, and unswerving devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Corporal Miller upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
