The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Alcadio Norber Mascarenas (MCSN: 2129236), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a reconnaissance team leader with the First Platoon, Company C, First Reconnaissance Battalion on Hill 488 in Quang Tin Province, Republic of Vietnam, deep in enemy controlled territory on 16 June 1966. During the early morning hours the eighteen-man platoon was attacked by an estimated North Vietnamese battalion. Corporal Mascarenas, displaying great professional skill, covered the withdrawal of his men from an exposed area to a more advantageous defensive position by setting up a deadly base of fire. When he arrived at the position he skillfully directed the fire of his small band of gallant Marines and in so doing stopped the initial enemy assault in his sector. As the attack progressed the enemy fire increased in volume and accuracy but he continued to set an example of calmness and courage. Corporal Mascarenas inspired his men with dynamic leadership and courageous fighting spirit until he fell, mortally wounded by an enemy hand grenade. As a result of his professional abilities and stirring example the assaulting enemy force was repulsed. His bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the cause of freedom.
