The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert Dee Lucas (MCSN: 2329712), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Scout with Company A, First Reconnaissance Battalion, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 18 March 1967. On a reconnaissance patrol deep within Viet Cong controlled territory near Nui Dang in Quang Ngai Province, Private First Class Lucas was acting as rear guard when he observed a reinforced enemy squad moving toward the patrol’s position. Reacting instantly, he sounded a warning and then, along with a companion, positioned themselves along the trail. As the two lead Viet Cong came within ten meters of their position, the Marines opened fire, killing both enemy soldiers. When his companion’s weapon malfunctioned, Private First Class Lucas defended the patrol by himself, steadfastly maintaining his position and killing two more Viet Cong attempting to flank the patrol. Suddenly, an enemy grenade landed in his position and he quickly rolled into the safety of a depression in the trail. After he explosion, he saw that two Viet Cong had advanced to within ten feet of his position. Unhesitatingly, he opened fire and killed them both. Directed to join the patrol, he raised up and fired to cover his movement, killing a seventh Viet Cong. Throughout the engagement, he courageously remained exposed to hostile fire and exploding grenades to accomplish his mission. By his inspiring initiative, heroic actions and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Private First Class Lucas upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
