The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal Henry James Lindsey (MCSN: 2344236), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company D, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. In the early morning hours of 28 June 1968, during Operation SCOTLAND II, Company D was occupying a defensive position on Hill 689 near the Khe Sanh Combat Base. Alertly observing three men near his unit’s defensive barbed wire, Lance Corporal Lindsey challenged them and, almost immediately, realized they were North Vietnamese soldiers. After one of the enemy ran toward him and threw a hand grenade at him, Lance Corporal Lindsey quickly killed the man and, pursuing two others, killed them also. After alerting his unit and consolidating the perimeter defense, he led a patrol in a thorough search of the area and, discovering numerous enemy infiltrators, killed ten additional North Vietnamese soldiers and captured their weapons. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in minimizing the effectiveness of the enemy attack. By his courage, bold initiative and steadfast devotion to duty at great personal risk, Lance Corporal Lindsey upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
