The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Paul Terry Lindsay (MCSN: 0-105251), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 12 November 1968, during Operation DARING ENDEAVOR in Quang Nam Province, Second Lieutenant Lindsay’s superb leadership and vast tactical skill enabled his platoon to account for five hostile soldiers confirmed killed and seven captured without sustaining a single Marine casualty. While searching an enemy bunker complex on 14 November, Second Lieutenant Lindsay’s platoon came under intense automatic weapons fire from a hostile emplacement. Disregarding his own safety, Second Lieutenant Lindsay boldly attacked the enemy position and, accurately throwing hand grenades, destroyed the hostile bunker. While skillfully directing the withdrawal of his platoon, he was wounded in the hip by an enemy grenade. When a supporting tank arrived, he disregarded his painful injury and boarded the vehicle to more effectively observe and direct the efforts of his men. Fearlessly maintaining his dangerously exposed position, he marked the hostile emplacements with M-79 grenade rounds and shouted orders to his platoon until all enemy resistance had ceased. Only after he had deployed his men into night defensive positions, would he allow himself to be medically treated. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Second Lieutenant Lindsay upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
