The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Eddie L. Landry (MCSN: 2035493), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company H, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines during Operation Starlite near Chu Lai, Republic of Vietnam on 18 August 1965. While engaged in an attack against well-entrenched insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces, Corporal Landry’s platoon came under such intense and accurate enemy small arms, recoilless rifle and rocket fire that movement in any direction without serious casualties was impossible. Quickly recognizing the gravity of the situation, he and a fellow Marine, acting without command, rushed from their protected positions and fearlessly assaulted the enemy. Completely disregarding the danger, Corporal Landry and his companion moved forward over thirty meters of open rice paddies swept by enemy fire. Corporal Landry continued his attack, destroying the crew of a rocket launcher and several of the enemy in the area before he fell to the ground mortally wounded. By his courageous actions and loyal devotion to duty, Corporal Landry inspired the platoon to destroy the remaining enemy, reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the cause of freedom.
