The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Allan W. Lamb (MCSN: 0-65948), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Tank Officer attached to Regimental Landing Team SEVEN during Operation STARLIGHT in Quang Ngai Province, Republic of Vietnam, during the period 18 to 24 August 1965. When an armored column of five amphibious tractors and two tanks were pinned down as a result of heavy enemy fire, Captain Lamb courageously led a relief column of a mounted rifle company on five LVTP5’s to aid the stricken column. Disregarding the extremely accurate enemy 57-mm. recoilless anti-tank fire which had already scored a hit on his tank from the direct front, Captain Lamb covered the dispersal of the LVTP5 column and escorted them to a covered position. Undaunted by the strength of the enemy fire power, he resolutely led the relief column back into the hazardous enemy fire. Through his insistent determination, after more than eight hours of continuous engagement with the enemy, the Viet Cong forces broke contact and the trapped Marines and equipment were rescued. By his daring actions and loyal devotion to duty in the face of great personal risk, Captain Lamb upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
