The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Patrick D. Kendley (MCSN: 0-95388), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Liaison Officer with the 6th Army of the Republic of Vietnam Regiment on 13 August 1966. Captain Kendley was engaged in action during an attack on the 21st Viet Cong Regiment in the vicinity of Chau Xuan, Republic of Vietnam. During the attack the Regiment encountered 57-mm. and 75-mm. recoilless rifle fire and a heavy volume of sniper fire. Captain Kendley organized a squad of Army of the Republic of Vietnam soldiers and attempted to attack the snipers. Upon seeing Captain Kendley and his squad advancing upon them the Viet Cong snipers centered their fire on his squad. When the members of his squad started to withdraw due to the heavy volume of fire, Captain Kendley remained in an exposed and open position and seeing the snipers rising to lay down fire on the withdrawing squad killed both of them with rifle fire. The Viet Cong then opened up with a light machine gun and wounded an Army of the Republic of Vietnam soldier. Upon observing this, Captain Kendley ran over 200 meters over open rice paddies under fire to the wounded soldier, where he bandaged his wounds. He then carried the wounded man over 200 meters through hostile fire, to a temporary aid station. Through his personal courage and bravery, Captain Kendley saved many lives by killing the two snipers and saved the life of the wounded Army of the Republic of Vietnam soldier. By his daring action and loyal devotion to duty in the face of personal risks, Captain Kendley upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
