The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant David R. Jones (MCSN: 0-101182), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy at Dong Ha, Republic of Vietnam on 1 – 2 May 1968. First Lieutenant Jones, acting Platoon Commander, skillfully maneuvered his platoon under intense fire and secured a position at the juncture of Cua Viet River and Jones Creek. Once in position, First Lieutenant Jones received orders to link up with an adjacent company stranded under intense enemy fire. During the early morning hours, First Lieutenant Jones commenced his assault and effected the link-up despite overwhelming enemy numbers and fire power. Shortly thereafter, an incoming mortar critically wounded First Lieutenant Jones and he was evacuated to an expedient casualty collection point at the rear of Echo Company. Wounded, and with complete disregard of his own personal safety, he led other wounded Marines in a fearless grenade attack against maneuvering enemy soldiers trying to gain a position to the rear of Echo Company. As a result of his bravery, personal leadership, and willingness to expose himself to enemy fire, First Lieutenant Jones successfully prevented his company from being attacked from the rear. First Lieutenant Jones’ bold initiative, courageous actions, and loyal devotion to duty in the face of personal risk reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
