The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Kenneth P. Hutchinson, Jr. (MCSN: 2290977), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-Seventh Marines, Republic of Vietnam. On 5 June 1968 during Operation Allen Brook, Lance Corporal Hutchinson’s company was advancing toward a tree line near the village of Cu Ban (4), when the Marines suddenly came under an intense enemy mortar attack and were pinned down by a heavy volume of automatic weapons fire. Realizing the critical situation and the importance of gaining fire superiority, Lance Corporal Hutchinson and four other Marines quickly maneuvered into position to assault an enemy machine gun emplacement. As the small unit advanced toward the well concealed position, two of the Marines were struck by hostile fire. Although it was difficult to determine the source of enemy fire, Lance Corporal Hutchinson unhesitatingly volunteered to continue the assault single-handed. Fearlessly and with complete disregard for the dangers involved, he maneuvered forward across the fire-swept terrain and was preparing to throw a hand grenade when he was struck by hostile fire. Unable to throw the grenade and realizing the danger to his comrades, Lance Corporal Hutchinson courageously threw himself upon the grenade, and was killed in the subsequent explosion, undoubtedly saving several Marines from injury or possible death. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Hutchinson upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
