The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Claude Humphries, Jr. (MCSN: 2085643), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gunner with Company G, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Dong Ha Mountains, Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam on 24 September 1966. During Operation Prairie, a platoon from Corporal Humphries’ Company was advancing toward its objective when it came under intense enemy machine gun and automatic weapons fire and was pinned down. His platoon quickly maneuvered around the enemy’s right flank and made solid contact with a strong North Vietnamese force estimated to be of Regimental size. During the ensuing battle, Corporal Humphries fearlessly engaged himself in a bitter firefight with three enemy machine guns. He immediately silenced one and, through his determination and professional skill, successfully reduced the effectiveness of the other two. Although seriously wounded and still under fire from enemy mortar and automatic weapons, he courageously disregarded his own safety to remain in position and provide covering fire for his comrades until his platoon had regrouped and evacuated all casualties. His fearless courage and intrepid fighting spirit were an inspiration to all who observed him. By his intrepidity, daring initiative and inspiring devotion to duty, Corporal Humphries upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
