The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal David Michael Hughes (MCSN: 2451969), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Combined Action Platoon 1-1-6, Third Marine Amphibious Force, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 7 December 1968, during a three-man patrol operation, the detonation of a hostile explosive device mortally wounded the point man, seriously injured Lance Corporal Hughes and the third man, and destroyed their radio. Ignoring his painful wound, Lance Corporal Hughes skillfully treated his wounded companion and led him safely through the mined area to a nearby beach where another enemy mine was detonated, seriously injuring his comrade a second time. Realizing the need for the immediate medical evacuation of the casualty, Lance Corporal Hughes fearlessly carried the Marine until he located a Popular Forces unit and, utilizing their radio, tried unsuccessfully to contact his platoon. Alertly observing a Navy boat performing coastal patrol, Lance Corporal Hughes released a smoke grenade as a signal to attract the attention of the crew, and when this was unobserved, he unhesitatingly dived into the sea and commenced swimming through the heavy surf toward the vessel. Observed by a crewman, he secured the necessary assistance and ensured the medical evacuation of his comrade. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Hughes saved the life of his companion and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
