The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Clark Gardner Henry (MCSN: 0-60399), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Executive Officer, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 18 July 1966. During Operation HASTINGS in Quang Tri Province, a Company providing rear security for the Battalion march column came under heavy mortar, small arms and automatic weapons fire from all sides from a North Vietnamese force of regimental size. When the enemy threatened to overrun the Company, Major Henry organized a relief force and proceeded 400 meters under intense fire to the beleaguered Company’s position. He quickly coordinated the actions of both units and reduced pressure on the rear guard Company, facilitating evacuation of the wounded and, on once occasion, carried one seriously wounded Marine 300 meter through deadly enemy fire to safety. He courageously remained in the hazardous battle area until all of the wounded were evacuated and thus materially raised the morale of his men. By his heroic actions, inspiring leadership and loyal devotion to duty at the risk of his own safety, Major Henry undoubtedly saved the lives of numerous Marines, prevented the enemy from overrunning friendly positions and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
