The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain Harrison L. Haley (MCSN: 0-80836), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of Company D, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 26 May 1968, during Operation SCOTLAND II, Captain Haley’s company was assigned a search and destroy mission in the vicinity of Hill 861 in Quang Tri Province, to be followed by an assault against a battalion objective. In the initial phase of the operation, Captain Haley repeatedly disregarded his own safety to engage and destroy the enemy. Fearlessly exposing himself to heavy enemy fire, he maneuvered his units with great skill and effectiveness, forcing enemy units to flee in panic from their well entrenched positions. While aggressively leading his men toward the objective, Captain Haley was killed by an exploding enemy land mine. By his inspiring courage, dynamic leadership and unswerving devotion to duty, Captain Haley contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
