The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Edwardo J. Gonzales (MCSN: 2227946), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company H, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in the Republic of Vietnam, on 3 May 1967. The First Platoon of Company H was given the mission to search and clear a small village located within the Demilitarized Zone just south of North Vietnam while on Operation HICKORY. As the First Platoon entered the village, the forward element was taken under heavy fire by the enemy in highly fortified and reinforced bunkers, utilizing automatic weapons and sniper fire from the flanks. Several casualties were sustained and the platoon was immediately pinned down. Lance Corporal Gonzales, with complete disregard for his own safety, crawled through the devastating enemy fire to the radioman, who had been instantly killed. He regained communications and established a base of fire by manning a M-60 machine gun, whose gunners were wounded. Alternately, he placed accurate counterfire on enemy targets and radioed valuable information to his platoon commander concerning artillery adjustments. He steadfastly maintained his tenuous position allowing for the safe evacuation of several of his fellow wounded Marines until he was mortally wounded by the enemy. By his outstanding courage, exceptional fortitude and valiant fighting spirit, Lance Corporal Gonzales served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
