The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal Clifford D. Glenn (MCSN: 1960069), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Cannoneer with Battery D, Second Battalion, Eleventh Marines, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. Shortly after midnight on 20 June 1966, Lance Corporal Glenn’s Battery was subjected to a Viet Cong infiltration attack, which had been preceded by a barrage of mortar rounds and grenades which inflicted a number of Marine casualties. Although suffering from multiple shrapnel wounds in the face and legs, Lance Corporal Glenn refused evacuation and remained in position to help repel the enemy onslaught. He played a major role in preventing the Viet Cong from overrunning the position, courageously engaging in hand to hand combat to protect his howitzer. He submitted to medical treatment and evacuation only after the enemy attack had been broken. By his uncommon determination despite his suffering, coupled with a relentless fighting spirit and unfaltering dedication to duty, Lance Corporal Glenn upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
