The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Benjamin L. Galindo (MCSN: 2040332), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Squad Leader with Company A, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in the Republic of Viet Nam as 30 October 1965. During the early morning hours, under the cover of darkness, Company A came under a mass wave attack by an enemy force of 300 to 400 men. Corporal Galindo manned a defensive position in the portion of the perimeter that bore the brunt of the enemy assault. Although wounded and under intense enemy fire, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, Corporal Galindo held his position and inflicted heavy casualties on the advancing enemy. When his position became untenable due to the heavy enemy fire, and a lack of ammunition, Corporal Galindo assisted two seriously wounded Marines to safety. After withdrawing to a new position, Corporal Galindo reorganized the Marines at that position and led them in a counterattack against the enemy forces again inflicting heavy casualties. After the enemy was ejected from the position, Corporal Galindo reestablished his squad’s defensive position and administered first aid to the more seriously wounded. By his daring actions and loyal devotion to duty at the risk of his own life, Corporal Galindo upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
