The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal [then Private First Class] Alan C. Donnelly (MCSN: 2391481), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Combat Engineer with Company B, First Engineer Battalion, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the morning of 12 November 1968, Lance Corporal Donnelly was attached to a platoon of Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, which was moving to Hill 151 near An Hoa in Quang Nam Province to establish an observation post. As the Marines were maneuvering across a heavily mined area, Lance Corporal Donnelly alertly detected two booby traps and a large enemy mine box which he skillfully detonated in place, thereby providing safe passage for the remaining members of the platoon. Upon arriving at the objective area, he advised his platoon commander to establish an immediate defensive position and fearlessly volunteered to inspect the area for hostile explosive devices. Disregarding his own safety, he unhesitatingly moved across the hazardous terrain and was bravely conducting his self-assigned mission when he detonated an enemy mine and was mortally wounded. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in preventing serious injury or possible death to other Marines. By his courage, resolute determination and steadfast devotion to duty, Lance Corporal Donnelly upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
