The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Thomas W. Desselle (MCSN: 2434898), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Machine Gunner with Company G, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 20 November 1968, while participating in Operation MEADE RIVER in Quang Nam Province, Company G became heavily engaged with an enemy company entrenched in well-fortified positions and sustained several casualties. Disregarding his own safety, Private First Class Desselle quickly moved his machine gun over approximately 150 meters of fire-swept terrain to an advantageous position and directed accurate fire against the hostile force. Observing a wounded Marine lying in an area dangerously exposed to enemy fire, he unhesitatingly commenced maneuvering forward to assist the casualty. As he advanced across the hazardous ground, he came under a heavy volume of hostile fire and was seriously injured. Undaunted, Private First Class Desselle resolutely continued to advance until he succumbed to his wounds. His determined efforts and aggressive fighting spirit inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty, Private First Class Desselle upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
