The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Lawrence E. Desmond (MCSN: 2240370), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company C, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 13 February 1968, Corporal Desmond’s company was dispatched to Hue City to reinforce Marine units engaged in heavy combat with entrenched enemy forces within the city. When his platoon sergeant was wounded within the first hour of fighting, he assumed the billet of platoon guide and performed those duties until 16 February when the acting platoon sergeant was wounded and it became necessary for Corporal Desmond to assume his duties. Displaying outstanding leadership, he courageously exposed himself to heavy enemy B-40 rocket and automatic weapons fire as he maneuvered his platoon into advantageous positions and skillfully directed fire against the enemy force. Although wounded on two occasions by rocket fragment, he steadfastly refused to be evacuated as he boldly moved from one position to another, encouraging and directing his men. On 17 February when his platoon commander was wounded, Corporal Desmond unhesitatingly assumed command of the platoon and, after reorganizing and consolidating his men, dauntlessly continued to advance in the attack. Not until 22 February when he received a third wound did he consent to be medically evacuated. His exceptional leadership, which far exceeded that expected of a Marine of his rank, inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, superior professionalism and selfless devotion to duty, Corporal Desmond upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
