The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain [then Lieutenant] Jack E. Deichman (MCSN: 0-101857), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Executive Officer, Company G, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against North Vietnamese forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On the evening of 30 April 1968, Company G suddenly came under intense enemy artillery fire from North Vietnamese forces. A heliborne extraction of Company G had to be aborted due to the intensity of the enemy’s artillery barrage. Captain Deichman was instrumental in organizing and assisting Company G’s withdrawal by foot. When elements of the company became disoriented in the darkness, he moved through the intense fire to ensure an orderly tactical withdrawal. On the morning of 1 May 1968, Company G commenced its attack on the village of Dai Do. Captain Deichman remained at the line of departure and coordinated the 60-mm. mortars supporting fires for the assault. On the following morning, he joined the company on its renewed assault through Dai Do and Dinh To. Captain Deichman’s expert leadership in maneuvering the reserve element of Company G through heavy intense enemy fire assisted his company in holding its hard won objectives. A fierce and brutal counter attack was launched by the enemy force against Company G. Captain Deichman steadfastly remained in his exposed fight position until his company commander could coordinate a defensive position. Because of the wounds received by his commander, he assisted in establishing the forward Second Battalion, Fourth Marines defensive positions. Captain Deichman’s courage, exceptional professionalism, and selfless devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
