The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Michael H. Davis (MCSN: 2236733), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company E, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 7 February 1968, Private First Class Davis was a member of a security force accompanying a resupply convoy on its return from Hue to Phu Bai. Early in the afternoon in the vicinity of Nam Hoa, Thua Thien Province, the convoy came under heavy mortar, recoilless rifle, machine gun and small arms fire from a numerically superior, well-entrenched enemy force and sustained numerous casualties. Without hesitation, Private First Class Davis debarked from his damaged vehicle and fearlessly exposed himself to intense enemy fire as he positioned his machine gun in the open terrain and directed a heavy volume of accurate fire against the enemy, enabling his companions to maneuver into defensive positions. During the ensuing fire fight, he repeatedly braved enemy fire to obtain ammunition re-supplies and to assist and encourage his companions. On two separate occasions, Private First Class Davis boldly crossed the fire-swept terrain to his damaged vehicle to locate additional ammunition supplies. Subsequently, when his machine gun ammunition was expended, he obtained the weapon of a wounded Marine and steadfastly continued to direct accurate fire against hostile positions. His fearless determination and bold fighting spirit throughout the four-hour fire fight inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in repulsing the enemy attack as he personally killed at least five enemy soldiers. By his resolute courage, exceptional initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Private First Class Davis upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
