The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Bruce W. Davis (MCSN: 2384439), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Tank Commander with Company A, First Tank Battalion, FIRST Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam on 23 February 1969. Corporal Davis’ tank was supporting the Fifty-Ninth Regional Forces Battalion during a search and destroy operation near the village of Nieu Dong in Quan Dien Ban Province when the friendly forces came under intense hostile fire and his vehicle was damaged by enemy anti-tank rockets. Reacting instantly Corporal Davis returned fire upon the hostile force, causing two secondary explosions and destroying two enemy anti-tank positions. Realizing that an adjacent tank had been badly damaged, he maneuvered his vehicle into a more advantageous position from which to provide suppressive fire, thereby enabling two wounded crew members of the other tank to be evacuated. Then, unhesitatingly exposing himself to hostile fire, he left the protection of his vehicle and fearlessly dashed across the fire-swept terrain to the damaged tank in order to assess its condition. Determining that the communications system was inoperable, but that the vehicle could still move under its own power, he boldly walked in front of the tank, in full view of the nearby enemy, and carefully guided the driver with hand signals until the vehicle had moved to relative safety. His heroic actions were instrumental in retrieving a damaged tank and, at the same time, preventing any additional casualties among the crew members. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Corporal Davis upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
