The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Bruce Davis (MCSN: 2035575), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 March 1966. During an operation in Quang Ngai Province, his company came under heavy frontal and flanking fire from a well-entrenched Viet Cong force. As Squad Leader in the reserve platoon, Corporal Davis was given the mission of assisting the left flank platoon in holding off an enemy assault and evacuating wounded Marines. He unhesitatingly led his squad through intense fire against an enemy unit that was attempting to envelope the company’s flank. Through his aggressive leadership and skilled deployment of his squad, the enemy assault was repulsed without a single friendly casualty. His men succeeded in killing twenty Viet Cong in the process. Again maneuvering his squad in order to make contact with the left flank platoon, one of his members was seriously wounded. When he attempted to reach the wounded Marine he was met by a large volume of fire. Corporal Davis, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, moved through the intense fire to the side of his comrade and gave him aid. While attempting to remove the wounded Marine, Corporal Davis was mortally wounded. His bold initiative, aggressiveness, and uncommon ability as a leader of men were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
