The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunnery Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Floyd J. Darrh (MCSN: 1297336), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with the Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Although painfully wounded while engaged with a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force near Hue City on 14 March 1968, Gunnery Sergeant Darrh refused medical attention and evacuation in order to remain with his men and maintain the momentum of his attack. Rallying his men, he skillfully directed the delivery of highly effective fire as he maneuvered his platoon to relieve another unit heavily engaged with the enemy. When every officer in his company had become a casualty, Gunnery Sergeant Darrh, continuing to ignore his injuries, immediately assumed command. Undaunted by the heavy volume of hostile fire, he quickly reorganized the company and fearlessly directed and led an aggressive counterattack which routed the enemy. Not until his unit had consolidated its position did he relinquish his command and allow himself to be evacuated. As a result of his superb leadership and valiant devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Gunnery Sergeant Darrh inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
