The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Terry Ray Brown (MCSN: 2307478), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Radio Operator with Company A, First Reconnaissance Battalion, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 28 October 1968, Private First Class Brown’s reconnaissance team was conducting a long-range patrol deep in enemy controlled territory in Quang Nam Province, and as the patrol leader and two members of his team moved forward to reconnoiter a trail, the Marines were fired upon by a numerically superior enemy force. Reacting instantly, Private First Class Brown fearlessly crossed the fire-swept terrain to provide effective covering fire for his isolated comrades, killing three hostile soldiers and enabling the beleaguered Marines to rejoin the patrol. After the team had advanced approximately 500 meters, the Marines again received hostile fire from a second and numerically larger enemy force. Rapidly assessing the situation, Private First Class Brown requested tactical air support as the patrol moved into defensive positions. Upon arrival of armed helicopters, he unhesitatingly climbed a large boulder and courageously exposed himself to the heavy volume of enemy fire while waving a brightly colored panel to mark his position. Disregarding his own safety he steadfastly remained in his dangerously exposed position and directed the fire of the helicopters on the hostile soldiers, thereby allowing the patrol to break contact and maneuver to a landing zone for extraction. When the Marines arrived at the selected site, they came under a heavy volume of automatic weapons fire from two fortified enemy positions. Continuing his determined efforts, Private First Class Brown fearlessly assaulted the first hostile emplacement, and after firing his M-79 grenade launcher at the enemy with unerring accuracy, he swiftly destroyed the bunker with a hand grenade, killing its occupants. Turning his attention to the second hostile position, he daringly leaped on top of the fortification and fearlessly threw a hand grenade through the firing port, killing approximately eight enemy soldiers. By his courage, resolute determination and steadfast devotion to duty, Private First Class Brown enabled his patrol to be extracted without sustaining a single casualty and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
