The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Huron J. Lucas, Jr. (MCSN: 427520), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Scout in a Rifle Platoon of Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands 24 July 1944. When his platoon was halted by enemy machine-gun fire during an advance through a ravine, Private First Class Lucas crawled ahead of the front lines and threw several hand grenades into a cave from which the enemy was firing. Failing to silence the hostile fire completely, he returned to his own lines and, although wounded, obtained another supply of hand grenades and again moved forward to the cave to complete the destruction of the enemy within. By his courage under fire and perseverance in the completion of his mission, Private First Class Lucas materially aided his platoon to continue its advance. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
