The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Aiden A. Zirkle (MCSN: 389303), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company E. Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action on Okinawa Island, Ryukyu Group, 13 April 1945. With his rifle squad imperiled by an intense barrage of hostile machine-gun fire, Corporal Zirkle instantly realized the necessity for further movement to a more advantageous location and exposing himself continually to enemy fire, moved from man to man to direct the fire and movement of his squad. Although seriously wounded, he continued to lead his men until he had successfully maneuvered them to a commanding position. Then refusing to allow the stretcher-bearers to expose themselves to the heavy Japanese fire, he crawled back unaided to the company lines to receive medical attention. His courageous leadership, initiative and gallant devotion to duty were inspiring to his men and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
