The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private William J. Woods (MCSN: 854475), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as squad leader while serving with the Fifth Engineer Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands from 3 to 21 March 1945. Suddenly attacked by hostile small arms fire while acting as leader of a mine clearing and demolition team beyond friendly front lines, Private First Class Woods boldly stood up and delivered a volley of protective fire upon the enemy’s position, thereby enabling his squad to take cover from the exposed terrain. Consistently skillful in the performance of his hazardous duties he persisted in his daring tactics until he was mortally wounded on 21 March while neutralizing the fire of a Japanese cave. His outstanding devotion to duty and relentless fighting spirit reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Woods and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
