The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward L. Wolfe (MCSN: 486410), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 24 June 1944. When the advance of his company was retarded by intense hostile fire from pill boxes and caves, Private First Class Wolfe voluntarily took his bazooka and moving forward of the exposed left flank fired on these emplacements silencing three pill boxes. Courageously working his way up the slope of a hill, he located enemy troops in two caves and after finding the route of approach, led a demolitions team for the destruction of these Japanese strong points. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
