The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Kacmier W. Wojtak (MCSN: 517625), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a member of a search part of Headquarters Company, Headquarters Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian Island, Marianas Group on 5 August 1944. Entering a cave during a search for intelligence information left behind by high Japanese military officers, Staff Sergeant Wojtak sighted two enemy soldiers, fired upon them and withdrew. When interpreters failed to elicit a response from the cave he reentered with his Commanding Officer and the rest of his patrol and although wounded with the other members of his party by hostile hand grenades, covered the enemy with pistol fire while the remainder of his patrol withdrew. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Staff Sergeant Wojtak and the United States Naval Service.
