The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Donald W. Wishowski (MCSN: 809879), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as driver of a one ton truck serving with the 37 mm gun platoon Regimental Weapons Company, Twenty-third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands on 21 February 1945. With his truck the only vehicle of the platoon to be landed successfully, Private First Class Wishowski unhesitatingly braved heavy enemy artillery and mortar fire in order to move two 37 mm guns into effective firing positions thereby enabling his unit to place vitally needed supporting fire against the well-fortified strong point of the enemy. Although wounded while carrying out his hazardous task, he valiantly persisted in his efforts until he received a second and fatal wound. By his determined fighting spirit and cool courage in the face of danger, Private First Class Wishowski contributed materially to the success of his platoon during a critical phase of the battle and his unfaltering devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
