The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Robert T. Wheeler, Sr. (MCSN: 260296), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a member of a Combat Patrol of Company I, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands on 28 July 1944. Engaged in the elimination of Japanese cave installations preparatory to the attack on Mount Chachao, Platoon Sergeant Wheeler heroically crawled thirty feet to aid a wounded Marine and succeeded in dragging him to safety despite intense enemy rifle and grenade fire which had already caused five casualties in his platoon. His courage and perseverance were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
