The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Richard H. Webber (MCSN: 354746), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Acting Squad Leader of an Assault Platoon of Company K, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands from 15 to 17 September 1944. Unhesitatingly assuming command when his Platoon Leader, Platoon Sergeant and Sergeant Guide became casualties shortly after landing, Sergeant Webber fearlessly led his platoon in a daring assault on hostile pill boxes defending the north end of the beach. Skillfully deploying his men and directing the effective use of fire power, white phosphorous and rifle anti-tank grenades he was responsible for the complete destruction of these positions. During the defense of his newly won positions over a period of forty-eight hours he strategically disposed his men and by his coolness under fire, encouraged them to repulse three counter attacks and annihilate the enemy. His indomitable fighting spirit, exemplary leadership and gallant devotion to duty were contributing factors in the success of our forces in that area and reflect great credit on Sergeant Webber and the United States Naval Service.
