The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private William L. Upchurch (MCSN: 941555), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Bulldozer Operator of Company A, Fifth Engineer Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 23 March 1945. Assigned the mission of constructing a road for tanks a hundred yards in front of friendly lines, Private Upchurch unhesitatingly began his hazardous task and, although constantly exposed to full observation of the enemy and in a situation where covering fire was impossible, continued in his efforts until the roadway was completed. By his bold and tireless effort he provided a means for tanks to move forward in support of the infantry’s attack, thereby contributing materially to the success of our operations against the enemy in this sector. Private Upchurch’s courageous determination and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
