The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant George H. Tuthill (MCSN: 342197), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Fonte Hill, Guam, Mariana Islands on the night of 25-26 July 1944. While in command of a machine gun section protecting the left flank of the Battalion position, Sergeant Tuthill skillfully employed his guns to inflict heavy casualties and to baffle the enemy concerning our strength and dispositions despite heavy mortar machine gun, rifle and grenade fire. After the leader of the rifle unit protecting his guns had been wounded, he assumed complete control of the left flank of the Battalion sector and throughout the night repulsed repeated hostile attacks. His courageous leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
