The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Walton LeRoy Turner (MCSN: 0-6623), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry and intrepidity as Director Officer on board the U.S.S. SAN FRANCISCO (CA-38), in action against enemy Japanese Naval Forces in the Solomon Islands Area on 12 and 13 November 1942. After his director had become useless and the station raked by enemy fire, Captain Turner with utter disregard for his own personal safety, directed the fighting of fires and assisted in caring for the wounded. His heroic devotion to duty in the face of grave danger was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
