The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Eugene C. Townsend (MCSN: 814049), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, Reinforced First Provisional Marine Brigade in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Guam in the Marianas on 22 July 1944. Carrying out a pre-dawn mission to inform friendly troops situated between the battalion command post and Bangi Point that reinforcements were moving up along our front lines to the point, Private First Class Townsend fearlessly risked his life to proceed under a merciless rain of mortar and machine gun fire, boldly crossing the open fire swept fields despite the addition risks encountered from illuminating shells and infiltrating enemy troops. Completing his mission he worked tirelessly in evacuating many of the wounded from the frontline area to positions of comparative safety, continuing his voluntary efforts until daylight. Fatally wounded later in the day, while executing a hazardous patrol Private First Class Townsend, by his comprehensive knowledge of the difficult terrain and his great personal valor in the face of savage, unceasing opposition contributed essentially to the successful reinforcement of Bangi Point without loss during the night and to the subsequent repulse of the enemy’s ruthless counter attacks. His resolute conduct throughout reflects the highest credit upon Private First Class Townsend and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
