The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Robert R. Thompson (MCSN: 215253), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of Reconnaissance Company, Headquarters Battalion, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 26 June 1944. During a heavy enemy mortar and machine gun concentration on his platoon’s position, Platoon Sergeant Thompson braved Japanese fire three times to go forward and carry wounded men to a protected area where they could receive medical aid. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Platoon Sergeant Thompson and the United States Naval Service.
