The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Lyle B. Stanley (MCSN: 397923), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Medium Tank Driver of Company C, Fourth Tank Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 8 March 1945. When his tank was hit by a napalm bomb during an infantry attack, Corporal Stanley courageously remained alone in the tank and drove it from the fire. Using an extinguisher, he put out the fire to save the vehicle from complete destruction. By his coolness, initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Stanley upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
