The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Dudley Smith (MCSN: 540370), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a member of Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 19 June 1944. When well-concealed and camouflaged enemy emplacements in caves were holding up the advance of his company, Private First Class Smith volunteered to carry a bright yellow panel several hundred yards in front of our front lines to mark the camouflaged caves for the tank and half-track gunners who were able to locate them. Though seriously wounded, he carried out his mission and enabled the supporting arms to destroy the enemy. His courage, fortitude and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States naval Service.
