The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Miller W. Scott (MCSN: 1172224), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Platoon Sergeant of Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 8 July 1953. When his platoon commander became a casualty during the defense of a vital outpost position far forward of the main line of resistance which was under murderous enemy mortar and artillery fire and vicious hostile infantry attacks, Sergeant Scott unhesitatingly assumed command and courageously exposed himself to the devastating hostile fire in order to reorganize the defensive positions, skillfully placing his men where they could repel the enemy probes. Although painfully wounded, he refused evacuation and continued to hurl numerous grenades at the enemy to assist in repulsing the numerically superior attacking force. During a lull in the action, he again refused evacuation and carried a wounded comrade to safety and medical aid, returning to the outpost through an intense hostile preparatory barrage to direct the defense of his sector of the vital position. By his skilled leadership, aggressive fighting spirit and unyielding devotion to duty, Sergeant Scott contributed in large measure to the successful defense of the outpost and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
