The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James L. Rosenmiller (MCSN: 850170), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Acting Fire Team Leader in a platoon of Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu and Ngesebus, Palau Islands, 29 September 1944. Advancing forward of the lines in the face of almost certain death from a withering barrage of Japanese artillery fire, Private First Class Rosenmiller unhesitatingly went to the rescue of a comrade who had fallen critically wounded during a fierce attempt to destroy and enemy fieldpiece and, despite the grave hazards, brought the wounded man to a place of safety. When the advance of his platoon was halted by deadly hostile automatic and sniper fire from a well-covered cave during an attack on one of the low ridges on Ngesebus later the same day, he boldly crept over precipitous terrain and, reaching an advantageous position, completely routed and destroyed the concealed enemy. By his daring initiative and relentless fighting spirit, Private First Class Rosenmiller contributed essentially to the success of his unit in securing that section of the island and his great personal valor in the face of grave peril was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
