The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Marvin C. Plock (MCSN: 0-18966), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer of Company L, Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 21 May 1945. Assuming command of a platoon after the platoon leader became a casualty, First Lieutenant Plock led his men in a completely successful attack upon King Ridge which was defended by a large number of fanatically resisting enemy. Upon reaching his objective he quickly reorganized his unit under heavy enemy mortar and artillery fire moving about the position to emplace and encourage his men despite wounds received during the action. When the Japanese launched a well-coordinated counter attack that night he observed and directed our mortar fire, encouraged his men, supervised the removal of the wounded and distributed grenades, contributing materially to the repulse of the attack. His indomitable fighting spirit, inspiring leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
