The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Private First Class Jay J. Pinckney (MCSN: 357352), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action at New Georgia, Solomon Islands in aggressively crawling forward to successfully destroy an enemy machine gun position by use of hand grenades and later employing his own automatic weapon with such effectiveness as to be largely responsible for breaking up a hostile counter attack on 20 July 1943.
