The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Herbert O’Neal (MCSN: 456340), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tank Commander of an Armored Amphibian of the First Armored Amphibian Battalion, First Provisional Marine Brigade, Third Amphibious Corps, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 21 July 1944. When his tank struck a mine and caught fire, Sergeant O’Neal opened the turret and evacuated one of the injured crew members. Despite the intense fire and exploding ammunition, he reentered the tank to evacuate the other wounded crew man and, in the face of enemy fire, proceeded to administer first aid to the injured. His initiative and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant O’Neal and the United States Naval Service.
