The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Robert F. O’Brien (MCSN: 0-8456), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer of Company L, Third Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands from 20 to 24 November 1943. Courageously leading his men ashore in the face of heavy enemy anti-boat, machine-gun and sniper fire, Captain O’Brien promptly reorganized his company and, completely disregarding his own personal safety, greatly assisted in holding a shallow beachhead throughout the night. The following morning, under intense, persistent hostile machine-gun and mortar fire, he skillfully directed an aggressive , determined attack on the south beach of the island and contributed materially to the seizure of a vital beachhead of sufficient size to enable the Division to land reinforcements and supplies. Captain O’Brien’s inspiring leadership, expert tactical ability and indomitable fighting spirit during this extremely hazardous period were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Unites States Naval Service.
