The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Harry W. Nyegaard (MCSN: 517959), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Wireman serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Group, on 19 June 1944. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Private First Class Nyegaard crossed and re-crossed the area between the company to which he was laying a line and the battalion command post to obtain sufficient wire. Although the company was pinned down by fierce, intense Japanese mortar, machine-gun and small-arms fire, he courageously continued to carry out his vital tasks until mortally wounded while splicing the wire. Private First Class Nyegaard’s fearless determination and tenacious devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
