The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal John R. Nee (MCSN: 861029), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against Japanese forces in the Agana River Ares, Guam, Mariana Islands, on the night of 1 August 1944. With his squad pinned sown in their mortar pit by heavy enemy small arms fire during an attack by hostile night raiders, Corporal Nee observed two Japanese armed with grenades advancing toward the gun pit under cover of sniper fire and, unhesitatingly leaving the cover of his position and exposing himself to the concentrated barrage, succeeded in killing the advancing enemy and the two snipers with his rifle. Despite serious wounds received during the action which subsequently proved fatal, Corporal Nee, by his daring initiative and gallant fortitude, saved the lives of the entrapped Marines, and his valiant devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
