    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Arthur H. Naylor, Jr. (MCSN: 0-10782), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company F, second Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 21 February 1945. After coming under intense mortar and machine-gun fire from well-concealed positions at the base of Mount Suribachi, Captain Naylor lead his company in a determined attack and, courageously proceeding forward in his zone of action, spotted hostile strong points and directed fire upon these positions. Coolly walking among his men, guiding and coordinating the attack, he supervised his company in the complete destruction of all enemy resistance. His initiative and tactical skill, he contributed materially to the success of the Battalion’s mission, and his unswerving devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
